Portland, Oregon, converted automobile parking into bicycle parking on Belmont Street. Demand for bicycle parking was too high to be accommodated on the sidewalks, so the city constructed bicycle parking corrals. A dozen or more bicycles can be parked into the space taken up by one parked car, so the city greatly increased the total amount of parking by converting several automobile parking spaces into several dozen bicycle parking spaces. The bicycle parking corrals have been so popular that businesses on other blocks have requested the city to build more.
