Perils for Pedestrians Episode 170

Overlook on Woodrow Wilson Bridge Trail
Pedestrians and bicyclists take advantage of a "bump out" overlook on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Trail. The Woodrow Wilson Bridge takes I-95 across the Potomac River between Virginia and Maryland at the southern tip of Washington, DC. The ped-bike trail enables non-motorized modes to cross the Potomac, too, shaving miles off of the nearest alternative route. In addition to its role as an important transportation link for peds and bikes, amenities such as the overlooks make the bridge itself a destination.

Topics in Episode 170:

  • We talk with U.S. Deputy Secretary of Transportation John Porcari about Livable Communities at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Trail.

  • We visit a new pedestrian bridge across the Missouri River between Omaha, Nebraska, and Council Bluffs, Iowa.

  • We travel to Kansas City, Missouri, where it is difficult for pedestrians to cross the Missouri River.

  • We drop in on the grand opening of the Walkway Over The Hudson in Poughkeepsie, New York. We ask Governor Paterson about pedestrian access to other New York bridges.
